Twitter is the Modern PR, but Might Not Be For Everyone

I always appreciate Jakob Nielsen's perspective on things web-related. This BusinessWeek interview is a few months old by now, but still worth the quick read.

In response to the question, is Twitter a good idea for CEOs, Neilsen says, "Posting on the Web is the modern PR, and the CEO's job is to articulate the company's vision and direction, which requires more than 140 characters. Being perceived as a wise guy or a shallow thinker is not going to do your stock price much good."

A good point. I think it becomes necessary for a company engaged in social marketing to decide who are the best people to be engaged in activities such as Twitter and Facebook. My guess is that the employees that are most passionate about the company's products or services are the best to be out there advocating and building connections. Just watch out for the productivity losses...

"The growth in social media can become a major drain on the economy unless people learn how to be in control of their time instead of allowing external updates to be in the driver's seat."

Amen. I'm kind of amazed at how much time people have to post to Facebook during the work day. I'm guilty of it myself.
