Moving out

Our new digs

I'm happy to say that I am now enjoying my third month in my new office on North Boulevard. I certainly miss having my primary computer at home for when the occasional late night inspiration hits, but it was a long time coming and a much needed move out of the home office.

You know, for the longest time when I would tell people that I work out of my home, they would reply, Oh, don't you just love being able to do that? or, That must be so great. This has always baffled me. I've decided that these comments primarily came from people who worked in offices, and perhaps, had always worked in offices. I mean, I love my wife and daughter, but I hated working out of the house...

In fact, since moving over to the SRC building at 1320 North Boulevard, I've vastly increased my productivity. Just compare these sample daily timelines from before and after the move. For those of you that don't know me personally, it's important to note that my daughter, Vivienne, is just shy of two years old.

Before the move

  • 8:30 - Check email
  • 8:35 - Vivienne wakes up; Change diaper; Fetch juice
  • 8:45 - Breakfast with the family
  • 9:15 - Start TiVo (Sesame Street or Teletubbies)
  • 9:16 - Attempt to sneak out of room
  • 9:17 - Start work
  • 9:45 - Pause work; Start another episode of Sesame Street or maybe Oobi
  • 9:46 - Give up on TV. Visit sesamestreet.com with Vivienne; Try to sneak peeks at email inbox during game loads
  • 10:00 - Vivienne and Meredith leave for grocery store
  • 10:02 - Make every phone call possible; Discourage time wasting chit-chat
  • 10:30 - Work
  • 11:30 - Help bring groceries in from the car and put them away
  • 11:50 - Work
  • 12:30 - Lunch
  • 1:00 - Vivienne's naptime; Work
  • 3:00 - Run errands, etc
  • 4:30 - Back home; Work
  • 4:32 - Visit Noggin.com; Play Oobi games
  • 4:40 - Give up on work entirely; Allow myself to actually enjoy playing games with Vivienne
  • 5:00 - Playtime; Dinner; Bathtime, etc
  • 9:00 - Work

After the move

  • 8:45 - Check email
  • 9:00 - Review to-do list
  • 9:15 - Start work
  • 11:30 - Pause work; Check email; Make phone calls
  • 12:15 - Lunch with high-level big-city executives, RE: Synergistic web-enabled eConvergence (and how to make truckloads of cash)
  • 1:30 - Visit bank; Count money
  • 2:15 - Check email
  • 2:30 - Work
  • 5:00 - Check email; Write to-dos for next day
  • 5:30 - Smoke cigar rolled in $100 bill; Head home
  • 6:00 - Enjoy a night at home with the family

As you can see, things are much better since the move. Not only in terms of productivity, but also cigar-wise.

In all seriousness, the move was a much needed change and everything just fell into place. Seems to be the way things generally work for me.

So, if you're in the neighborhood, please feel free to stop by. I'll save a cigar for you.
